ART at ARTE in April – Eleni

I am Eleni Dalko. I was born in the real world. I live in the dream world. I paint, I draw, I make collages and I sculpt to balance the opposite inside me. I don’t limit myself to one medium, style or concept. Picasso’s work and the surrealism movement my main influences. I want to meet spontaneous artists, dream collectors, chaos architects, quantum theorists and anyone with a crazy idea who is lunatic enough to follow it through! I love to declare: ‘I am nothing and I am everything’. By Eleni’s Stuff ‪#‎artemarket‬‪#‎wemakewhatwesell‬

ART at ARTE in April by Andy Anderson

I am Andy Anderson. I’ve been an avid photographer for 35 years and have been framing photography for almost as long. What I learned way back when is that not many pretty pictures look very good on the wall. My goal is to create a piece of PhotoArt that does. I like a style that I call photographic impressionism. All my photos are real images – no Photoshop creations. I use different techniques to define the subject including long zoom, a camera function that isolates a particular color with all others going gray, and HDR (High Dynamic Range) fusion software. I believe that great piece of PhotoArt tells a little story and/or leaves you feeling good without getting old and tired.#wemakewhatwesell #arteuae Find me at ARTE on Friday 8th April from 11am to 6pm.

ART at ARTE in April -Anjana Bose

I am Anjana Bose of I-Craft. I am neither an artist nor a designer. I depend of my imagination to explore, experiment and create. My artwork takes inspiration from the things around me and experiences I have. I started I-Craft with the hope to introduce a piece of art in everyday life; to make art usable / wearable and definitely affordable. I use a number of surfaces and medium like acrylics, charcoal pencil etc. This time, I am at ARTE with my paintings and looking forward to take a small step closer to my dream.#artemarket #wemakewhatwesell

ARTE’S Artists

Uzaan – Hang On

March 25 – This really will be a good Friday with Easter, Mother’s Day, spring and rain celebrations all happening at ARTE in Times Square, Dubai – from 11:00am -6:00pm – FREE parking!. The ARTE Volunteers have been working like little bunnies to bring you a very festive market so hop on down and spend some time hunting for the best locally produced handmade items around!

And while you are at ARTE, check out this week’s South African crafter, Uzaan.

dsc_0040

Originally from Cape Town, Uzaan, Owner of Hang On, has lived in Dubai for 7 years, however, she has only been an ARTE member for three months! Uzaan told me she had been coming to ARTE as a customer for years. She was in awe of the great handmade products she would find. She has always been creative and has done a lot of bead work and home décor for her family and friends, but she never thought she would one day be selling her own work at ARTE!

dsc_0038

One day, Uzaan was thinking of the times when you have brief moments of cold like in the cinema, on a plane or Dubai winter evenings. She noticed her pashminas and scarves were always falling off or were too bulky to carry around. She wanted something like a poncho, but more elegant, lighter, easy to carry in your handbag. So she came up with a gorgeous shoulder throw which she calls a “Hang On”!

dsc_0035

Simple; comfortable, yet fashionable, Uzaan lightly adorns her throws on one side with crocheted roses, buttons, lace or beads. She keeps the colors plain so you can match them to any outfit. She is happy to custom make her “Hang On”to suit any special requests her customers may have. Just let her know what you want!

Uzaan also creates beautiful accessories you can wear with or without the “hang on”. Her accessories use recycled materials, along with beads and charms, so nothing is wasted.

Stop by Uzaan’s table this Friday at ARTE and say hi!

ARTE’s Artists

Sharon of Shataz

When was the last time you were in Ras Al Khaimah? Well, here is the excuse you have been looking for: ARTE is in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) this week at the Al Hamra Mall from 11:00 am – 8:00pm. An easy drive from Dubai and a stone’s throw from the Al Hamra golf course.

This week’s artist, Sharon lives in RAK in the Yasmin Village, but is originally from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Sharon has been a member of ARTE for 10 years!

sharon-and-rob

Sharon has always loved working with her hands. In South Africa, Sharon started an arts and crafts business with her daughter Taryn. They combined their names to form Shataz. Sharon and her daughter did a lot of work with pottery, decopodge and Fabric painting. Sharon adored making ceramics, but when she moved to the UAE, she was not able to continue. She really missed doing pottery, but then then a friend introduced her to jewelry making and that lead her to ARTE.

Sharon’s other passion is card making and she makes reasonably priced cards for any occasions. This Friday in RAK is the perfect time to get your Easter cards! Don’t see the card that is right for you? Just ask Sharon to customize one for you.

Sharon is known at ARTE for her bubbly personality and for her ribbon fairies. I like to buy her small ones to tie on gifts and I have her larger fairies all over my home. They always bring a smile to my face.

sharons-fairies-2

Recently, Sharon has started making more three dimensional fairies.

Sharon’s husband Rob keeps Sharon company at the fairs and you may be seeing his mosaic work at ARTE in the future. Be sure to stop by Sharon’s table at The Al Hamra Mall this weekend or at Times Square on March 25th and say hello!

January is always a time for reflection and revision. Many people are considering healthier lifestyle choices, especially after the indulgences of the festive season. ARTE is fortunate to have two vendors offering vegan food products, including gluten and sugar free options.

Raw Love Vegan

Evelin at Raw Love Vegan hails from Estonia and turned vegetarian 5 years ago at the encouragement of her daughter. She explains raw vegan food as “excluding all animal products and all foods cooked above 48°C (118 °F) when the enzymes start to degrade”. The difference between raw vegan and vegetarian food is that vegetarianism also excludes all animal products including honey and eggs, but food can be cooked, fried, steamed or baked. Evelin believes “we are what we eat and that everything starts with our choices of the way we think, eat and behave and always finding excuses not eating healthy, train or thinking positively”. She loves the amazing, light feeling after her raw vegan meals and boasts to the benefits of a clearer skin, easy digestion and having more energy.

To start your new day in a new way, Evelin suggests this breakfast recipe for Morning “Nana” Ice-cream:

Morning ‘’nana’’ ice-cream with homemade muesli, gluten free, sugar free & dairy free

Morning ‘’nana’’ ice-cream with homemade muesli, gluten free, sugar free & dairy free

Morning ‘’nana’’ ice-cream with homemade muesli, gluten free, sugar free & dairy free.

Preparation time: 10 min

Muesli

2 cups of rolled oats

½ cup of dried figs

½ cup of dates

½ cup of hazelnuts / almonds / peanuts – choose which one you like

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tbs cacao

Pinch of Pink Himalayans salt

Cut figs into smaller pieces. Blend the nuts in the high speed mixer. Add all other ingredients. You can add more cinnamon, cacao or nutmeg as per your own taste or any other dried fruit. Instead of figs you can use raisins and different kind of nuts. Store in an airtight container in fridge up to 7 days.

‘’Nana’’ Ice-Cream

2 frozen bananas

2 cups of frozen blueberries or raspberries.

In case using raspberries add couple of dates into the mixture to make it sweeter, or use maple / agave syrup. Mix all items together in blender, until it becomes creamy texture. Serve immediately with the raw homemade muesli.

Lecia & Vivian Desserts

British cook Lecia, from the duo Lecia & Vivian, prepares her desserts raw, which means that “all the uncooked ingredients hold on to their nutritional value as the good stuff is not cooked out by conventional methods”. By only using natural ingredients like nuts, dates, coconut, cacao powder, dried fruit, maple syrup, coconut nectar, fresh fruit and vegetables, Lecia proclaims “you’ll be eating a delicious tasting dessert while putting all kinds of perky nutritional vitamins and minerals in your body”.

Just because you made a resolution to be healthy, does not mean you can’t still have a little treat too! Here is a wonderfully healthy recipe for a vegan Apple Crumble dessert courtesy of Lecia & Vivian:

Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble

Makes 6 individual medium size ramekins (3.5” diameter)

Filling:

6 large apples peeled and cored

8 dates

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp maple syrup (coconut nectar) Add more if you have a sweet tooth

Pinch salt

Crumble topping:

1 cup walnuts

¼ cup dates (stoned, chopped and packed down)

¼ cup raisins (golden or dark)

½ cup shredded coconut

1/3 cup buckinis (soaked and dehydrated buckwheat – can be swapped with chopped almonds instead)

¼ tsp vanilla extract

Pulse 4 of the apples in a processor into small chunks and transfer to a bowl. Process the remaining 2 apples in a blender with the dates, maple syrup, cinnamon and salt until it’s like apple sauce. Mix both of these together in a bowl and divide mixture between the ramekins. Mix all the crumble ingredients together into a crumbly but moist texture. If using almonds instead of buckinis make sure to process the almonds first into small pieces then add rest of crumble ingredients. If you want the crumble to press together then add small amount of water (1-2 tsp) towards the end of the blending. Spread over top of the fillings and chill in the fridge covered in cling film. Will keep for 2 days in the fridge or 4 weeks in the freezer. Defrost before eating.
