January is always a time for reflection and revision. Many people are considering healthier lifestyle choices, especially after the indulgences of the festive season. ARTE is fortunate to have two vendors offering vegan food products, including gluten and sugar free options.

Raw Love Vegan

Evelin at Raw Love Vegan hails from Estonia and turned vegetarian 5 years ago at the encouragement of her daughter. She explains raw vegan food as “excluding all animal products and all foods cooked above 48°C (118 °F) when the enzymes start to degrade”. The difference between raw vegan and vegetarian food is that vegetarianism also excludes all animal products including honey and eggs, but food can be cooked, fried, steamed or baked. Evelin believes “we are what we eat and that everything starts with our choices of the way we think, eat and behave and always finding excuses not eating healthy, train or thinking positively”. She loves the amazing, light feeling after her raw vegan meals and boasts to the benefits of a clearer skin, easy digestion and having more energy.

To start your new day in a new way, Evelin suggests this breakfast recipe for Morning “Nana” Ice-cream:

Preparation time: 10 min

Muesli

2 cups of rolled oats

½ cup of dried figs

½ cup of dates

½ cup of hazelnuts / almonds / peanuts – choose which one you like

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tbs cacao

Pinch of Pink Himalayans salt

Cut figs into smaller pieces. Blend the nuts in the high speed mixer. Add all other ingredients. You can add more cinnamon, cacao or nutmeg as per your own taste or any other dried fruit. Instead of figs you can use raisins and different kind of nuts. Store in an airtight container in fridge up to 7 days.

‘’Nana’’ Ice-Cream

2 frozen bananas

2 cups of frozen blueberries or raspberries.

In case using raspberries add couple of dates into the mixture to make it sweeter, or use maple / agave syrup. Mix all items together in blender, until it becomes creamy texture. Serve immediately with the raw homemade muesli.

Lecia & Vivian Desserts

British cook Lecia, from the duo Lecia & Vivian, prepares her desserts raw, which means that “all the uncooked ingredients hold on to their nutritional value as the good stuff is not cooked out by conventional methods”. By only using natural ingredients like nuts, dates, coconut, cacao powder, dried fruit, maple syrup, coconut nectar, fresh fruit and vegetables, Lecia proclaims “you’ll be eating a delicious tasting dessert while putting all kinds of perky nutritional vitamins and minerals in your body”.

Just because you made a resolution to be healthy, does not mean you can’t still have a little treat too! Here is a wonderfully healthy recipe for a vegan Apple Crumble dessert courtesy of Lecia & Vivian:

Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble

Makes 6 individual medium size ramekins (3.5” diameter)

Filling:

6 large apples peeled and cored

8 dates

2 tsp cinnamon

1 tbsp maple syrup (coconut nectar) Add more if you have a sweet tooth

Pinch salt

Crumble topping:

1 cup walnuts

¼ cup dates (stoned, chopped and packed down)

¼ cup raisins (golden or dark)

½ cup shredded coconut

1/3 cup buckinis (soaked and dehydrated buckwheat – can be swapped with chopped almonds instead)

¼ tsp vanilla extract

Pulse 4 of the apples in a processor into small chunks and transfer to a bowl. Process the remaining 2 apples in a blender with the dates, maple syrup, cinnamon and salt until it’s like apple sauce. Mix both of these together in a bowl and divide mixture between the ramekins. Mix all the crumble ingredients together into a crumbly but moist texture. If using almonds instead of buckinis make sure to process the almonds first into small pieces then add rest of crumble ingredients. If you want the crumble to press together then add small amount of water (1-2 tsp) towards the end of the blending. Spread over top of the fillings and chill in the fridge covered in cling film. Will keep for 2 days in the fridge or 4 weeks in the freezer. Defrost before eating.

Thank you from the ARTE Organisers

As 2012 comes to a close, with new sights for 2013, we have many reasons to be happy.

Here are a few of them.

– We are in high demand and we are being found by many who would like to showcase their work

– Our ARTE fairs receive increasing amounts of footfall, souk after souk.

– We receive fantastic and positive feedback. Any constructive criticism we receive are taken into consideration

– We have reached more than 8000 LIKES on our facebook pages and many of our blog posts go viral.

But, what matters the most to us are the stories that vendors share with us:

– I have had such a lovely day

– I made a new friend

– it is a social outing for me

– I sold well

Testimonial sharing profound words by Hitesh Kanwar of Paper Curves:
“First of all a big thank you to everyone on Team ARTE for organising ARTE and providing all the help. I see so many new fairs coming up (I attended a few) and I can see the great amount of difference between those and ARTE. The way in which you guys handle, communicate and promote( and give feedback), it shows the love with which you do it. Hats off to you.”

This is just a snapshot as to the joy that we bring to vendors who support us souk after souk.

Sure, we have some strong 2013 goals for ARTE. One goal is to improve the quality of product, and vendor displays. Offer creative help for new products and product displays. And finally, we are planning to introduce a Pinterest page featuring ARTE products.

But it is Your success at ARTE that makes us love what we do. Your good experience is one more than we have and for that we are grateful.

Wishing you a fantastic 2013 and see you at the ARTE souks commencing in January 2013.

Touching lives – the late Alvin Apolonio

At ARTE, artisans come together not only to sell their handcrafts to the public, but also to support each other in one’s journey. Jan D’Sa, artist-designer-sculptor-writer and owner of both Janys De and the Cultural Arts Travelogue, has such a story to share.

“I was a repressed creative for nearly 20 years, allowing my sketches and paintings to be viewed by my own two eyes and no one else’s. I also threw my performing artist and musician garb into the metaphorical dark alley and retreated into my shell. I became a very shy and reserved person.”  Those who know Jan since she joined ARTE in its early days may probably remember that shy girl.

Jan, instead, chose to showcase her creativity through secondary artforms, i.e. through writing, through salt dough mini-sculptures (below) and wire crochet jewelry making.

Then one day in 2011, a Philipino artist by the name of Alvin Apolonio, showed up at ARTE with paintings that awoke a dormant artistic volcano within Jan. Like many repressed creatives, she was felt a lot of fear in painting again. “I decided to attend an art workshop that Alvin Apolonio held, in conjunction with Carrie Wareham, Black Sheep Art Studio (an ARTE member). It was just so that I could work past this block that I had.”

“I will never forget what Alvin told me as I started to use the paintbrush after 2 decades and struggled to hold it with confidence.” Alvin said, “I look forward to seeing your art. You have it in you. Just a bit of practice.””

Eight months later, this April 2012, Jan finally showed her art to the public for the first time at ARTE. Sadly, Alvin was not around to see it. He had passed away in the Philippines after a brief illness early this year.

“I was devastated as were many other artisans who regarded Alvin not only as a versatile painter and artist, but a friend. I had also experienced another artisan pass away a day after Alvin passed away (she was a jewelry designer), so the devastation of 2 creatives passing away was quite a strong experience.”

These days Jan has allowed her music and theatrical expression to show itself, though in small, monitored doses.  She has also mustered courage to step out and  give workshops in creative writing where the art of spontaneity and reconnection with one’s creative self are key.  She has dared to create mixed media work where she combines various art and handcraft techniques such as wire work, crochet, acrylics, decoupage and clay. “All because Alvin reminded me that the secret to living more is by creating more.” Whenever Jan gets stuck as a creative, she remembers Alvin’s words and pushes beyond borders into the realm that only other former repressed creatives know of.
